SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Mike Singletary called Ted Ginn Jr. on Friday to personally welcome him to the 49ers.
The fastest draft bust in Dolphins’ history is bound for the Bay Area — filling one of the 49ers’ biggest offseason needs in the process, and giving Ginn a well-timed fresh start across the country in the NFC West.
“We added a talented player that fit a need,” Singletary said. “He’s a bundle of potential and his upside is off the charts. This guy can fly.”
Ginn, a receiver and quality return man, was traded to the 49ers on Friday for a fifth- round pick — the 145th overall selection. The Dolphins had him on the block even before they acquired Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall on Wednesday from the Broncos.
While Ginn wasn’t sure he was on his way out when Miami got Marshall, he had a pretty good idea.
“If you know the game and you know the business, you are ready for anything,” he said. “I’m just going to come into the 49ers and show ’em what I got.”
Taken with the ninth overall pick in 2007, Ginn made only five touchdown catches in three seasons while averaging 13.0 yards per reception.
Seahawks sign two Williams receivers
SEATTLE — The Seahawks signed wide receivers Mike Williams and Reggie Williams, both former first-round draft picks by other teams who then flopped.
Mike Williams is the former No. 10 overall draft choice of the Lions who ballooned to 270 pounds and has been out of the league for two years. He played for new Seahawks coach Pete Carroll at Southern California.
“It’s like riding a bike — except the bike is a little rusty right now,” Williams said.
Reggie Williams is the former ninth overall pick of the Jaguars from the University of Washington who is serving two years’ probation stemming from a cocaine possession charge. He’s been out of the league for a year.
Jones clarifies remark about Parcells
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — Jerry Jones wants Cowboys fans to know he has “special” feelings toward Bill Parcells, despite a secretly recorded conversation in which he’s heard saying otherwise.
Speaking for the first time since a 47-second, cellphone video hit the Internet, the Cowboys owner said anyone who considered his remark about Parcells as being negative took it out of context.
“If I say to somebody that ‘you’re not worth a flip,’ then that means I think you’re pretty good, certainly if I follow up with, ‘I love you,’ ” Jones said.
• Receiver Sam Hurd signed his contract offer to remain with the Cowboys.
