Appalachian State on Wednesday made Jason Capel, right the youngest men’s basketball coach in NCAA Division I. At 30 years, three months, Capel, replaces Buzz Peterson, who left for UNC Wilmington. Capel was an assistant to Peterson last year — his only experience as a coach. It didn’t stop athletic director Charlie Cobb from promoting Capel, whose older brother, Jeff III, coaches Oklahoma. His father, Jeff Jr., is an assistant with the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats. It marks the second time Appalachian State will have the nation’s youngest coach. Bobby Cremins was 28 when he was hired in 1975.
