My face completely melted off Monday night. The amount of skill that people can have playing an instrument made of air is incredible, as evidenced during the regional championship at Boulder’s . Eighteen contestants vied for a spot a the National Air Guitar Championships in Washington, D.C. Craig “Hot Lixx Hulahan” Billmeier (the three-time national Air Guitar champion), Randall “Big Rig” Layman (who holds the record for winning the most regional Air Guitar championships) and a chemistry professor from CU-Boulder judged the talent and gave the contenders scores between 4.0 and 6.0.
The evening may have started slow, but once the face-melting began, it did not let up. Ffter two rounds of judging, it came down to an “air off” between participants Dreamcatcher and Thundergland. Both contenders gave inspired performances, but Boulder’s Electric Gland, with his electrified package, narrowly won the title and will go on to represent Boulder in the national competition. — Nathan Rist
