The Colorado Mammoth wrapped up a disappointing season with a 11-10 loss Friday to the Calgary Roughnecks despite 47 saves from goalie Chris Levis.
The Roughnecks clinched a first-round home game for the National Lacrosse League playoffs, while the Mammoth close out their first season without a playoff berth in the franchise’s eight years.
In front of 15,727 fans at the Pepsi Center, the Mammoth rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie the game on goals by Jamie Shewchuk and Jed Prossner with 43 seconds left. But Calgary managed to scoop up a rebound, with Chris Ranger stuffing home the game-winning goal with just 16 seconds left. A final shot for the Mammoth ringed off the pipe, handing Colorado its eighth straight home loss of the season.
CU golfers in fourth at Big 12.
The University of Colorado women’s golf team was in a tie for fourth place after the first day of the Big 12 Championship at Jimmy Austin OU Golf Course in Norman, Okla., after shooting a 14-over-par 302.
The Buffs were nine strokes behind the leader, Oklahoma State. CU’s Emily Talley was tied for fourth after an even 72, two strokes behind co-leaders Caroline Hedwall and Victoria Park, both of Oklahoma State.
• The CU men’s team was in seventh place of the conference championship at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas, after shooting an 8-over 584 in the first two rounds, both played Friday.
The Buffs trailed co-leaders Texas A&M and Oklahoma State by 19 strokes. Jason Burstyn paced CU with a 1-under 143 for a a tie for 14th, nine strokes behind the leader, Chris Ward of Texas Tech.
• The Colorado State men’s team led the Cougar Classic at Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah, after shooting a 7-under 569 in the first two rounds.
• The NCAA announced the 80 teams that qualified for the Division II men’s championship. Colorado Mines received the sixth seed in the region, and Colorado Christian was seeded ninth. Also, Greg Johnson of Regis will compete as one of the top individuals not on a qualifying team. The Central and West regions will be played May 3-5 in Palm Desert, Calif.
Two leave Wyoming football team.
Two offensive linemen — junior college transfer Nick Puetz and redshirt freshman Scott Criss — have left the Wyoming football team for personal reasons.
Puetz came to Wyoming from Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College in January and had earned a starting job at offensive left guard.
