“Hawaii Day by Day” ($27.99, Wiley) is part of Frommer’s reworked “Day by Day” series that was already a hit in the mini-book format. This time the popular travel guidebook company has expanded the concept, making the guides the size of normal books and substantially adding to the content. Still here: the glossy pages with gorgeous photos, the savvy itineraries with well-chosen options for activities, dining, lodging and sights, the best bets to help you quickly focus your trip based on number of days, and the detailed, written directions for each component that help get you around. The downsides: With larger pages, the maps should be clearer than they are (the ink is very faint), and the thin paper means the bleed-through can make it even harder to read, especially on a sunny day. The big, fold-out, removable map in the back, tucked inside a plastic envelope, is outstanding, though. Kyle Wagner
