When this guy said he was taking up cross country running, he wasn’t kidding. Geoff Weber, a 42-year-old Navy lieutenant stationed in Virginia Beach, Va., is out to break the 30-year-old record for the 2,800-mile transcontinental run. Weber dipped a toe in the Pacific Ocean at the Santa Monica Pier last Friday and began running east. He aims to reach the Atlantic in New York on June 7 — meaning he will have to average 62 miles over 46 days to break the mark by 8 1/2 hours. “I’ve found that I’m not super fast,” Weber said, “but I’m a little bit like a diesel engine: I can keep going.” The Seattle Times
