FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Larimer County’s sheriff says jail overcrowding has led to an increase of fights among inmates and he is concerned about his personnel’s safety.
Sheriff Jim Alderden says he is worried violence at the Larimer County jail may continue because 500 inmates are housed at a facility meant for 460. The county is already releasing inmates early and some who are charged with less serious crimes are being released without bond.
Alderden says more budget cuts at the jail are expected for 2012. He says one solution to overcrowding is to ask judges to limit the number of people who get sent to jail.
