The host University of Denver women’s lacrosse team will play for the championship of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation after defeating Cal-Davis 14-9 in a semifinal Friday. The Pioneers, the regular-season champion and No. 1 seed, will play No. 2-seeded Stanford, which defeated California 9-7 in the first semifinal, at 1 p.m. Sunday at DU’s Peter Barton Stadium.
Ali Flury, Bonnie Wells and Kara Secora all had hat tricks for the Pioneers, who built a 9-4 halftime lead, and then recovered after the Aggies cut their deficit to 11-9 with six minutes to play. Lauren Ciccomascolo responded with a free position goal a minute later, and Wells added two insurance goals.
CSU water polo advances.
Aspen Rapp scored five goals to lead the Colorado State women’s water polo team to a 10-8 upset win over Cal State-East Bay at the Western Water Polo Association championship in Bakersfield, Calif.
The Rams, the No. 6 seed, also got two goals each from Sarah Ostling and Katy Armstrong, with both of Armstrong’s coming in the fourth period as CSU held off the third-seeded Pioneers.
DU skiers honored.
The University of Denver ski team was recognized on the floor of the state senate as senators Dan Gibbs and Chris Romer read a proclamation honoring the NCAA champions, who wrapped up their third consecutive crown this spring.
The Pioneers also met with Governor Bill Ritter.
RMAC considers expansion.
The presidents of the 14 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schools have asked RMAC commissioner Joel R. Smith to “seek out and research potential new members.”
“The RMAC presidents continue to look for more efficient ways to operate the conference,” Smith said. “They would like to see if getting larger would improve scheduling options, while reducing extreme travel.” A membership task force was created of presidents and athletic directors to review and analyze potential members. The task force will present its recommendations at the RMAC meetings in June.
The last conference expansion was in 1996, when five members of the Colorado Athletic Conference joined.
