Colorado weather: Snow in the mountains, thunderstorms in Denver

More than a foot of snow will be possible in parts of Colorado’s mountains, forecasters said

A storm brewing Thursday is expected to bring inches of fresh snow to Colorado’s mountains and douse Denver with afternoon showers, according to the National Weather Service.

Scattered snow that started on Wednesday in Colorado’s mountains and foothills will become widespread on Thursday and continue into Friday morning, . The heaviest snow is expected to fall in the Front Range mountains south of Interstate 70, forecasters said.

As of Thursday morning, included expected totals of:

  • 4 inches on Cameron Pass, with up to 9 inches possible
  • 5 inches in Breckenridge and Winter Park, with up to 9 inches possible
  • 7 inches in Bailey, Conifer and Eldora, with up to 10 inches possible
  • 8 inches on Kenosha Pass, with up to 12 inches possible
  • 9 inches in Georgetown and at Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, with up to 11 inches possible
  • 9 inches on Loveland Pass and Berthoud Pass, with up to 14 inches possible
  • 10 inches on Hoosier Pass, with up to 15 inches possible
  • 11 inches in Alma in Park County, with up to 14 inches possible
  • 12 inches at Echo Lake in Clear Creek County, with up to 17 inches possible

A will be in effect from 6 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday for parts of Boulder, Chaffee, Clear Creek, Fremont, Gilpin, Grand, Jackson, Lake, Larimer, Park and Summit counties, according to the weather service.

The snow will make mountain travel hazardous, forecasters said in the advisory.

No snow is expected to fall in Denver, according to the weather service. Rain started in Denver early Thursday morning and will be possible through 5 p.m. Friday, though thunderstorms are only expected between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday, .
