COMMERCE CITY, Colo.—Authorities have euthanized more than 150 chickens after seizing the birds while investigating what they believe is a cockfighting ring.

Investigators found the birds at an Adams County farm Friday. Animal control officers say they made the discovery when responding to call about a stray dog.

Authorities say the birds showed signs of being used in fighting and were too aggressive to try to rehabilitate. They say several dead roosters were found inside a house.

The owners of the property where the birds were found say the roosters belonged to an acquaintance and they know nothing of cockfighting.

The state veterinarian is working with Adams County investigators.
