GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Colorado Mountain College, Colorado State University, the city of Rifle and a nonprofit foundation are teaming up to see if turning grasses into biofuels is economical.
The schools, Rifle and the Flux Farm Foundation in Carbondale make up the Western Carbon Neutral Bioenergy Consortium. The group is working on turning grass into transportation fuel.
Jon Prater, program coordinator, says the biggest question is whether the process can be profitable. He says if a plant operated by Colorado Community College in Rifle can operate economically, it could make some 4.25 million acres of otherwise underused land on the Western Slope more valuable.
