DENVER—Thousands of immigrant advocates marched through the streets of downtown Denver in two separate rallies to protest Arizona’s strict immigration law that takes effect this summer.
Participants held signs that read, “We Are Not Illegal” as they marched through Denver’s 16th Street Mall in downtown Denver with police escorts on motorcycles. The Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition estimated that as many as 8,000 people participated in one rally but Denver police could not substantiate the number.
The marchers joined others around the country in annual rallies calling for changes to the country’s immigration laws. The marches come a week after Arizona signed one of the toughest immigration laws in the country. It calls for police officers to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they’re in the country illegally.
