GOLDEN — The sunny skies to start Monday’s 16th annual Ashley Forey Invitational turned to overcast, and the wind became quite breezy by midafternoon. Couple that with challenging greens and it made a recipe for trouble.
But not for Lakewood golfer Andi Hibbert, who shot a 2-over-par 75 — including three birdies over the final four holes — to capture medalist honors in the field of 131 players at Rolling Hills Country Club. Arapahoe freshman Claudia Davis finished second with a 77.
“The temperatures and wind were constantly changing,” Hibbert said. “You had to stay focused and try to play in all of this. The greens were absolutely ridiculous. They ran very true, but they were like putting on glass. You could see a lot of girls out there struggling with their putting, and I was one of them.”
The tournament, a prelude to the girls state championship this month, showed that Arapahoe may be the team to beat. Davis, Sarah Moore (87) and Katy Dyach-kova (89) shot a combined score of 253 to win the team title. Cherry Creek finished second at 260 and Skyline was third at 268.
“We know there are several other good teams,” Arapahoe coach Pat Wilson said. “We have strength in numbers. We won today in spite of some subpar performances. (Monday’s) probably a good indicator of the state tournament. Whoever has a couple of hot golfers is going to win it.”
Meghann Forey, a cousin of Ashley Forey, a Wheat Ridge golfer who was killed in a car accident in 1994, shot an 85 to lead Ralston Valley.
