Nuggets coach George Karl was feeling better and expected to return home Wednesday after spending nearly a week in a hospital because of complications from battling throat and neck cancer.
Karl was hospitalized last Friday after he experienced swelling in his left knee while being treated for a blood clot in his right leg, Karl’s life partner, Kim Van Deraa, wrote in her blog Tuesday night.
Karl had been expected to be released Tuesday, until his left knee again became swollen. Karl completed a six-week treatment of chemotherapy and radiation a month ago. He has been hospitalized twice because of blood clots.
Following are excerpts from Van Deraa’s blog chronicling Karl’s battle:
“We were hoping to be able to come home (Tuesday) but the swelling in his left knee caused him from bearing any weight on the leg so the trip to the chair was a painful experience. I knew George was in a lot of pain because he complained (which he doesn’t do very often) about his left leg more than any other procedure he has had during his hospital stay.
“After an ultrasound and X-rays, they determined there was a lot of fluid in his arthritic knee and would have to drain it to see if it is just fluid or blood pooling in the area. Thank goodness it was only fluid.”
