Getting your player ready...

The first of the spring trophies will be handed out next week at Gates Tennis Center and at Pueblo’s City Park. But before we get to that, we have the regional round, which could leave some very good players at home. Notably in Loveland, where reigning Class 5A No. 1 singles champion Natalie Dunn of Poudre has already qualified, but Loveland’s Jen Weissmann outlasted Rocky Mountain’s Cara Cromwell in three sets Tuesday to earn a spot in the championship match and a trip to state.

Cherry Creek’s Caroline Schnell, a champion in 2008, Rampart’s Eva Kovacs and a host of challengers could make for a compelling championship May 15.

Throw in what some think could be a good test for Cherry Creek in the team race from Fairview, and drama could fill the air.

GIRLS GOLF

Did you say something about regionals?

Eight of the nine golf regionals — in both classifications — will be held either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday at various venues across the Centennial State. The lone holdout is the 5A Metro-West regional, which will wait until next Thursday to go at Fox Hollow in Lakewood.

Eighty-four players will qualify for both Class 5A (CommonGround G.C. in Aurora) and 4A (The Cobble Creek G.C. in Montrose) on May 24-25.

Defending 4A champion Emily Wood of Salida will play her regional Tuesday in Colorado City at Hollydot Golf Course.

BOYS LACROSSE

Tourney time

It’s win-or-go-home time.

Friday’s action starts with a couple of intriguing matches, including No. 23 Denver South — with leading scorer John Hogsett (55 goals) — taking on No. 10 Mountain Vista at 7 p.m. at Shea Stadium.

Rock Canyon at Monarch, Boulder at Chaparral and Highlands Ranch at Heritage are all worth checking out.

Steamboat Springs won the newly formed Mountain League and will host Fairview on Saturday.

BOYS RUGBY

Scrum anyone?

It is not a sanctioned CHSAA sport, but if you haven’t been to a rugby match, it is definitely something to see.

Saturday’s semifinals of both the Division 1 and Division 2 state playoffs at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park begin at 10 and 11:15 a.m.

In Division 1, Chaparral’s Wolverine Blue will play top-seeded Denver East, followed by Aurora’s Saracens taking on Colorado Springs.
