CENTENNIAL — An Arapahoe County judge has sentenced Matthew James Watkins to the maximum sentence of 48 years in prison for the stabbing death of his wife Cora.
Watkins, 48, was convicted March 17 of second-degree murder. He stabbed his wife to death in the Aurora home, while their children were present, in January 2008.
During the sentencing hearing today, two jurors urged the judge to impose the maximum sentence, saying they had “failed” by not reaching a guilty verdict on the original first-degree murder charge against Watkins. “I feel we didn’t do our job,” juror Kelli Hayes said. “I feel didn’t do our job. Justice wasn’t served for Cora Watkins.”
