Quent Scaggs, 21, has been sentenced to life in prison plus 36 years for killing 19-year-old Aaron Garcia in northeast Denver in 2008.

Scaggs was found guilty in April of first-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping and aggravated robbery.

Scaggs was sentenced Tuesday as a habitual criminal.

Scaggs shot and killed Garcia in a carjacking in a Wal-Mart parking lot in the Stapleton area on Oct. 30, 2008.

He raced away in his car. Garcia was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds inside the car in an alley near East 36th Avenue and Oneida Street.

Scaggs was arrested the next day.

According to a statement from the Denver District Attorney’s Office, “The victim’s mother told Denver District Court Judge Ken Laff that she is in prison every day since her son died; the victim’s father noted that Aaron had been his best friend.”

Scaggs has been arrested on numerous robbery charges in Denver and Adams counties.

After his arrest, he was tried and convicted in a 2006 robbery in Denver and was sentenced to 10 years in prison in January 2009.
