A man was shot in the chest early Thursday after an argument outside a northeast Denver nightclub, police said.

The victim was taken to Denver Health Medical Center in critical condition, said Sonny Jackson, a Denver Police Department spokesman.

The shooting, which could be gang-related, happened about 2:10 a.m. near the Roxy Lounge, at 2549 Welton St., Jackson said. It was about 40 minutes after the bar closed.

About 30 people, mostly men, were arguing in the street when a light-colored car drove by and shots were fired, Jackson said.

Joe Richards, one of Roxy’s owners, said the shooting was not related to the nightclub or anything that happened inside before closing.

“That was the crowd we wouldn’t let in,” Richards said.
