LOS ANGELES — Outfielder Manny Ramirez was out of the Dodgers’ starting lineup Thursday night for the second game in a row because of a sore little toe on his left foot.
The injury occurred while the slugger was swinging his leg back and forth in the trainer’s room, trying to get loose before Wednesday night’s 10-5 loss to San Diego, and accidentally made contact with a table. He pinch-hit in the fifth inning and struck out with two men on base.
Maine leaves game after one batter
WASHINGTON — Mets right-hander John Maine left New York’s game against the Nationals after throwing just five pitches.
Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said Maine was removed for “precautionary reasons.” Pitching coach Dan Warthen noticed that Maine’s “velocity was down” while he warmed up in the bullpen, Horwitz said.
Maine, who has a history of problems with his right shoulder, will be examined by a doctor today.
Footnotes.
Brewers outfielder Jody Gerut left the team to be with his wife, who is expecting a baby.
• The Pirates placed left-hander Jack Taschner on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring, a move that allowed them to activate Brendan Donnelly (rib cage).
• The Red Sox designated left-hander Scott Schoeneweis for assignment on the one-year anniversary of his wife’s death from a drug overdose of cocaine and an anesthetic, lidocaine.
