Denver’s teachers agreed to a delayed pay increase next school year and a pay freeze in 2011-12, according to the contract agreement reached between the district and union that was announced Thursday.

The contract still must be approved by members of the Denver Classroom Teachers Association and the school board.

If approved, Denver’s 5,000 teachers will receive no cost-of-living increases for both the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school year.

But in January 2011 they will get their steps and lane increases in 2010-11 — which compensate teachers for experience and additional education. Superintendent Tom Boasberg said that equates to an average increase of 2.5 percent.

Also, the agreement would end the five early release days provided to give teachers professional development but that frustrated many parents. The new contract would replace those days with one full student contact day and two full professional development days.
