Take a jazz journey
Come pay tribute to a unique part of Denver’s musical history — an era in the ’40s and ’50s that drew the likes of Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis to the nightclubs in Five Points. The Five Points Jazz Festival is 1-7 p.m. today with performances by Manuel Molina, Elevations Jazz Orchestra, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance and more. The celebration takes place on stages and venues along Welton Street and includes art, contests, lectures, food and more. Free. or FloydJones@ColoradoBlackChamber.org
At the Movies
Explosively funny
Based on the SNL skit of the same name, “MacGruber” tells the tale of the vulgar, mullet-headed ex-special ops agent who’s called back to action to — you guessed it — make sure a big explosion doesn’t happen in Washington. Does he get the job done, or does he go out with a bang? R. 1 hour, 39 minutes.
A gloomy green dream
In “Shrek Forever After,” allegedly the last of the green ogre classics, a bored Shrek makes a pact with the nefarious Rumpelstiltskin in hopes of getting his groove back. But he gets duped badly in the deal, which places him in a dark version of Far Far Away — a land where ogres are hunted, and his friends and Fiona don’t recognize him. Can he find his way back? PG. 1 hour, 33 minutes.
Homebodies
Nation building
“Invictus,” out on DVD, tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela tried to mend the racial rifts that had torn his country apart. By joining with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team in an attempt to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup, he gave his country a united identity that all citizens, regardless of color, could support. PG-13. 2 hours, 14 minutes.
Love conquers all (holidays)
This ode to Cupid features an all-star cast of characters trying to make their way in the land of love. Amid breakups and makeups, they learn to handle the pressures of “Valentine’s Day.” PG-13. 2 hours, 5 minutes.
