LOVELAND, Colo.—Tea party activist Dan Maes has won top billing in Colorado’s contested Republican race for governor.

In a state GOP assembly Saturday, Maes edged former Rep. Scott McInnis, who has led in fundraising. McInnis and Maes both made primary ballots, but Maes had slightly more voters and will get top billing on ballots.

After receiving a standing ovation from Republican activists who cheered after results were announced, Maes said, “Wow.”

Democrats have only one candidate for the governor’s race, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.
