MONTROSE, Colo.—A man who dropped out of high school to fight in World War II has earned an honorary diploma from Montrose High School.
Principal James Barnhill says 95-year-old Russell William Cook earned the accolade through real-world experience. Cook received the honor Thursday because he could not attend a commencement ceremony Sunday.
Among members of the graduating class Sunday was Mallory Haulman, whose throat was slashed by a 14-year-old boy with a knife in a school hallway in 2008. The boy was sentenced to seven years in a youth corrections facility.
Haulman said her throat has healed, and the attack didn’t affect her grades. She plans to enroll in Mesa State College this fall.
