WARSAW, Poland — Poland’s flood death toll rose to 15 Monday after rain swelled the Vistula River to its highest level in 160 years, forcing thousands from their homes, a government official said.
“The situation is changing every minute, and all efforts are now aimed at helping people in flooded or endangered areas,” Malgorzata Wozniak, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration, said by phone.
Rivers have broken or soaked through levees and flooded the medieval cities of Krakow, Sandomierz and Wroclaw.
