A truck hauling “practice rockets” for the military crashed on Interstate 25 north of Denver early Wednesday.

The truck leaked diesel fuel in the crash, but the munitions remained safe and intact, according to emergency responders.

The truck was loaded with 2.75-inch practice rockets that were “not live” and “not explosive,” said Army Lt. Col. Steve Wollman, a Fort Carson spokesman. The accident happened about 5 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-25 near Colorado 7, according to North Metro Fire spokeswoman Wendy Forbes.

The driver hit a guardrail and the truck came to a stop, leaking diesel fuel onto the highway.

“There were no explosives; it appears to be practice ammunition,” said Candi Baker, an Adams County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman. “There was no danger to the public.”

The truck was carrying 10 pallets of the practice rockets, with 48 rockets per pallet, Wollman said. Kieran Nicholson, The Denver Post
