No. 4 Metro State stunned No. 1 North Georgia 4-1 in an elimination game at the NCAA Division II College Softball World Series on Saturday.
Once again, Christie Robinson (30-3) outpitched a first-team All-American, allowing just one run in seven innings, while battling seven more illegal pitch calls.
North Georgia right-hander Sarah Phillips allowed just four hits in six innings, but her record dropped to 44-2 this season.
Tara Mickelson broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to right-center. In the sixth, Jennessa Tesone hit a towering, two-run homer.
Before North Georgia lost 6-1 to Valdosta State (Ga.) on Friday, it had a 51-game winning streak, the second-longest in Division II history.
The Roadrunners will face No. 3 Hawaii on Sunday and must win twice against the Sea Warriors to advance to the championship game on Monday.
Metro State set up the elimination game against North Georgia by beating Wayne State (Mich.) 1-0. Molly Clark, a sophomore center fielder from Lakewood High School, had two of the Roadrunners’ three hits.
UNC loses tournament title in thriller.
Northern Colorado’s baseball team lost to top-seeded Utah Valley 4-3 in 10 innings in the championship game of the inaugural Great West Conference Tournament in Edinburg, Texas.
Second-seeded UNC gave up three consecutive singles in the 10th to Utah Valley and finished 34-24.
UNC junior Joe Sawicki pitched 8 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (none earned) and 13 hits. He issued one walk and had three strikeouts. Sawicki faced only nine Utah Valley batters in the first three innings and stranded the lone batter who reached in the fourth.
