PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Coast Guard says BP engineers will try to use a pair of giant shears to slice off the leaking oil pipe after a diamond-tipped saw became stuck. The saw had sliced through about half of the pipe when it snagged. It took BP 12 hours to free it.

The Coast Guard said late Wednesday that crews will try to use the shears to cut the 20-inch riser, which will then be fitted with a cap to capture most of the spewing oil.

As the edge of the slick drifted to 7 miles from the beaches of Pensacola, Fla., workers rushed to link a miles-long chain of booms designed to fend off the oil. The Associated Press
