DENVER—A University of Colorado dental school professor awaiting approval for a state dental license has resigned.

James said Thursday he expects to reapply for his professorship after he gets an active license.

An exception in state law had allowed James to treat patients and supervise students at a university clinic with an inactive license, but the exception expired in August. The Denver Post reported James treated patients after the change. James says he only instructed students and on rare occasions stepped in if students had difficulty on a procedure.

The newspaper reports that his students sometimes wrote prescriptions using drug credentials of faculty members who hadn’t seen the patients. James says he wasn’t involved in prescriptions.
