The first major hail and wind storm in the metro area this year carries an estimated insurance price tag of $70 million, according to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association.
The Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association says the price tag comes from approximately 13,600 auto and homeowner insurance claims.
Those claims were filed after baseball-sized hail and high winds caused widespread damage to cars and homes in Brighton, Commerce City and other communities in the northeast metro area, as well as parts of Pueblo.
“This storm is just round one of severe weather season in Colorado,” Carole Walker, Executive Director of the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association, said. “It’s much like a tornado siren warning us to take steps to protect ourselves, and our personal property,”
Insurance officials say Mother Nature made history last year with the most costly severe weather season on record. The total cost added up to more than $1.4 billion in insured damage, according to insurance officials.
A storm on July 20, 2009 ranks as the state’s most expensive insured disaster in actual insurance claims paid out with insured losses totaling $768 million. Those claims resulted from damage to vehicles and homes, according to insurance officials.
