A police-involved shooting in Colorado Springs is under investigation after a chase last night in which a police officer shot and killed a man, authorities say.

It is unclear whether the suspect had a gun and tried to shoot the officer and if so how many shots were fired. The names of the deceased suspect and the officer have not been released.

Police were investigating a crime on the 3500 block of North Carefree Circle at about 7:30 p.m. when a man at the scene bolted, said Sgt. Steve Noblitt of the Colorado Springs Police Department.

At least two police officers began running after the suspect into the Greentree apartment complex on the north east corner of Academy and North Carefree Circle.

“An officer was involved in a shooting with the suspect which resulted in the suspect being shot,” Noblitt said in a news release.

The suspect was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The officer who was involved in the shooting was not injured.

The officer has been placed on routine administrative leave with pay, which is common practice when officers are involved in deadly force situations, he said.

The Fourth Judicial District Attorney’s Office and members of the CSPD Violent Crimes/Homicide Unit are investigating the fatal shooting, Noblitt said.
