An art display constructed at Denver International Airport this month in conjunction with the new King Tut exhibit at the Denver Art Museum is stirring up controversy.
Residents such as Millie Lieberman of Denver are asking why officials selected Anubis, an early Egyptian god of the dead and a god of funerals, as a piece that welcomes people to the city.
“To me it’s a very sick and poor representation of what we’re all about here in Denver,” Lieberman said.
The Denver Art Museum stands behind the statue and says that is not what it is supposed to represent.
“It’s just a piece of art to celebrate the King Tut exhibit to the museum,” said Andrea Folton, director of communications at the museum.
She said the statue has traveled across the nation for years and has appeared in several airports and landmarks.
