U.S. Sen. Mark Udall said Wed nesday that he will introduce a bill to commit more research- and-development money to modernize the technology available to control oil spills from deep-water and onshore wells. At a news conference, Udall, D-Colo., said the oil industry relies on the same safety equipment used to fight the Exxon Valdez spill two decades ago.
He said because the industry has so much control over federally supported research, “the emphasis has been on increasing production, not safety.”
