More than 200 specialists will be hired by Catholic Health Initiatives as part of a $1.5 billion project to boost the Denver-based nonprofit health care system’s clinical information technology.

More than 100 people will be hired in the next three months, with another 100 positions to be filled next year. Positions include technical analysts, clinical informaticists, database administrators and application developers.

“A significant number will be based in Denver,” CHI spokesman Michael Romano said Friday. “We can’t be too specific because . . . this has just begun.”

The project includes system-wide electronic health records, standardization of clinical documents, bar-coded medication administration and computerized physician order entry.

CHI operates in 18 states with 72 hospitals; 40 long-term care, assisted- and residential-living facilities; and two community health-services organizations.

Colorado facilities include the St. Anthony hospitals in metro Denver, Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo and Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango.
