FRISCO, Colo.—The Colorado district attorney who filed sexual assault charges against NBA superstar Kobe Bryant has failed to make the Republican ballot in a state Senate race.
Mark Hurlbert failed to collect enough voters’ signatures to challenge Evergreen developer Tim Leonard in the Aug. 10 primary. He fell one vote short of making the ballot at the GOP delegates’ meeting in May.
Hurlbert said needed 1,000 signatures, but the secretary of state’s office says 724 of the 1,200 he submitted were invalid.
Hurlbert is district attorney in Eagle County and three other mountain counties. He dropped the case against Bryant in 2004 when Bryant’s accuser said she didn’t want to participate in a trial.
Leonard will face Democrat Jeanne Nicholson, a Gilpin County commissioner.
