Denver officials are likely to rule today on whether an art installation drawing attention to poultry-slaughtering practices can go up on the 16th Street Mall.

The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals applied for a permit to put a 250-pound chicken statue near 16th and Champa Streets, in front of a McDonald’s restaurant.

The permit sought an effective beginning date Monday, but city officials were still reviewing the matter.

Ann Williams, a spokeswoman for Denver’s Public Works Department, said a decision is expected today.

PETA is suspicious of the more than 10 months it has taken the city to review the permit application and has asked the city attorney’s office to allow a hearing on the matter.
