DENVER—An equipment malfunction at an east-Denver power substation briefly left thousands of people without electricity.
Xcel Energy spokesman Mark Stutz said a transformer failed when equipment meant to deflect lightning shut down a few minutes before 3 p.m. Monday. Crews restored power to about 6,600 customers in about an hour by shifting electricity from other substations.
The lightning deflector will be replaced.
National Jewish Hospital spokesman William Allstetter says power is back on at the hospital, but some services and appointments were disrupted because electronic records couldn’t be retrieved.
An explosion and fire damaged the substation June 7, knocking out power to about 31,000 people for hours. Temporary equipment was installed and a permanent fix is planned.
