Ball Corp. of Broomfield announced Tuesday that it has agreed to sell its Americas plastic packaging business to Amcor Limited of Australia for about $280 million.

The plastic packaging business employs about 1,000 people and includes five U.S. plants in Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, California and New Jersey, and research-and-development operations based in Broomfield and Westminster.

The transaction is expected to close this fall, depending on regulatory approval.
