ALAMOSA, Colo.—A wildfire burning in the Great Sand Dunes National Park has moved into forest service land and has reached the top of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range.
Firefighters Saturday estimate the fire had scorched 4,300 acres, down from an estimated 5,300 because of better mapping.
Fire information officer Dave Eaker said the fire reached the San Isabel National Forest and has slowed with the light winds on the eastern side of the mountain range. The fire burning in pine forests on steep rocky terrain did not threaten any park facilities or other buildings.
The fire is thought to have been started by lighting.
Eaker said the park remains open.
