SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — The father of Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal died Sunday from injuries he suffered after being kicked by a horse three weeks ago.
Furcal said his father, Silvino, died in his Caribbean homeland after complications from surgery.
In a phone interview with The Associated Press from the Dominican Republic, Furcal described his late father as his hitting coach and No. 1 fan.
Dodgers manager Joe Torre said Sunday in Boston that he expects Furcal back in the middle of the week. The team put Furcal on the bereavement list Thursday so he could be with his father.
Astros’ Quintero injured.
Houston catcher Humberto Quintero received seven stitches after getting hit in the head with a bat on Andres Blanco’s follow-through in a game against Texas.
Quintero was taken to a hospital for X-rays, but team officials said he was not showing any signs of a concussion.
