DENVER—A Colorado nonprofit is working with an Afghan group to build a school in Kabul for deaf children, who often face a bleak future with no communication skills or education.
Denver-based Mountain2Mountain is helping the Afghan National Association for the Deaf, which has outgrown the space it currently rents.
Two companies are donating materials and services. The Afghan government donated a 5-acre site.
Shannon Galpin, founder and president of Mountain2Mountain, says the school could be finished by the end of the summer. Work on a perimeter wall got under way Tuesday.
Eventurally up to 1,000 children from kindergarten through high school could attend. Plans also call for a training program for teachers for the deaf.
