An 86-year-old pilot died Wednesday while performing acrobatic aerial stunts in his experimental aircraft in Weld County.

Jonathon Wenzel of Brighton, owner of the small kit plane — manufactured in 2000 and certified for flight in 2008 — was reportedly killed on impact in the crash, which occurred about noon northeast of Fort Lupton.

Undersheriff Margie Martinez of the Weld County Sheriff’s Office said witnesses told investigators the plane was doing maneuvers when its wings collapsed and the plane spiraled to the ground.
