BOULDER, Colo.—Boulder County’s only contested election in the August primary is the surveyor’s race.

Two Democrats—newcomer Alan Greenberg and two-term incumbent Jason Emery—are vying for the part-time job that pays just $5,500. It’s the only county office that requires professional certification.

It’s uncommon for surveyors’ races to be contested even in the general election. The position is constitutionally mandated, a relic of the old West when carving up the vast landscapes into homesteads, towns and mining claims was critical.

Grand County Surveyor Warren Ward says the duties have changed, but the position’s no less critical. Ward, president of the National Association of County Surveyors, says the job includes dealing with boundary disputes, advising other county departments and maintaining historical records.
