DENVER—Colorado cyclists are protesting Black Hawk’s ban on riders pedaling through town and say opposition to the gambling town’s policy is growing.
About 100 bicyclists gathered at the state Capitol Tuesday to protest Black Hawk’s ordinance. State Sens. Chris Romer and Greg Brophy were among the speakers.
Cycling advocates think the community in the foothills west of Denver is the only one nationwide with such a ban. Cyclists use the road in Black Hawk to connect to the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway, a popular mountain road.
City officials say bicycles aren’t prohibited; riders just have to dismount and walk. The ban applies only to the narrow thoroughfares in town lined with historic buildings and newly built casinos, not the few residential streets.
