Eighty-two Globeville residents will receive checks totaling $440,000 this week from the settlement of a lawsuit against a company that released arsenic from a smelter in the Denver neighborhood.
Asarco Co., owners of the former Globe metals plant, agreed to settle the case more than a decade ago, but the cleanup and payments were interrupted by the comapny’s 2005 bankruptcy.
The Tucson company has spent $13.3 million cleaning up more than 300 properties on 89 acres contaminated by its smokestack emissions, which began in the 1920s, near the intersection of interstates 25 and 70.
Asarco stopped processing toxic cadmium at the site in 1993.
