Former University of Denver men’s lacrosse star Dillon Roy will make his Major League Lacrosse debut Sunday with the Denver Outlaws in their 7 p.m. game against the Chesapeake Bayhawks at Invesco Field at Mile High.

The Outlaws and Bayhawks are one game behind the Boston Cannons for the league lead.

Veteran attackman Brendan Mundorf, who leads the team in points scored, and former DU Pioneer Matt Brown, who has scored 16 goals in five games, will challenge Bayhawks star Peet Poillon, a former Ohio State standout.

DU women’s basketball promotes Hawkins.

University of Denver women’s basketball assistant coach Yvonne Hawkins was promoted to associate head coach, third-year head coach Erik Johnson announced Friday.

Hawkins joined the staff in summer 2008 as a 23-season coaching veteran. She is the Pioneers’ recruiting coordinator, coaches the post players and helps with the defense.

Hawkins has helped the Pioneers to back-to-back winning seasons and a 34-28 two-year record. The Pioneers led the Sun Belt Conference in defensive rebounds (26.3 per game) and were second in blocked shots (4.8) in 2009-10.

Before to coming to DU, Hawkins spent four seasons at Boston College, three of them with Johnson. Hawkins helped Boston College to the second round of the 2004-05 NCAA Tournament, the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 2005-06 and a WNIT quarterfinal appearance in 2007-08.

Former DU tennis player Simson gets postgraduate scholarship.

Former University of Denver men’s tennis player David Simson from Vienna, Austria, was awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. Simson, a senior starter in singles and doubles, will receive a one-time grant of $7,500 to help finance his graduate work.

Simson earned a 4.0 cumulative GPA in finance and helped the Pioneers to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances (2008 and 2010) in his three seasons at DU. He was a member of the DU dean’s list every quarter. Simson earned the Arthur Ashe Award for sportsmanship and leadership for the Mountain Region in 2010 and was an all-Sun Belt Conference singles honoree in 2009.

Simson plans to attend the UCLA School of Law in Los Angeles this fall.

Arp falls in North & South amateur meet.

Riley Arp of Fort Collins was eliminated from the North & South Men’s Amateur Championship at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.

Former Poudre High School and Colorado State star Arp, the 12th seed, fell to 13th-seeded Kelly Kraft in 19 holes. Kraft went on to beat top-seeded David Chung, ending his two-year run at Pinehurst No. 2. Kraft will face No. 31 Donald Constable in today’s championship match.
