A Colorado Springs man almost killed himself on the Fourth of July when his homemade “fireworks launcher” exploded, police said.

The man’s name and age have not been released. He sustained life-threatening internal injuries when he was hit with shrapnel from the device, which exploded about 8:30 p.m. in the back yard of a home at 1401 Calvert Ave.

Colorado Springs Police Sgt. Jim Jeffcoat told the Gazette the device had a fuse, a metal tube that sat on a platform and used chemicals, though authorities were not saying today what those chemicals were.

The police report noted that constructing an explosive device is against the law.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is among the agencies investigating, the Gazette reported.
