A black cloth hung over the drum set at King Baptist Church on Wednesday night to honor a young Marine who used to keep a steady beat for the choir.

Larry D. Harris Jr., a Boulder High School grad and longtime member of the King Baptist Church, was killed last week in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Cpl. Larry Harris Jr., 24, shown with his wife, Stacia, died in Afghanistan.

Friends and family gathered at the church to remember Harris and offer support to his widow, Stacia Harris, 22.

Larry Harris, who moved to Boulder with his family when he was 8, was carrying an injured Marine over his shoulder July 1 when he stumbled into an improvised explosive device, his wife said.

Larry Harris’ family moved to Thornton from Boulder during his senior year, but he stayed to graduate from Boulder High in 2003. He joined the Marines in 2006.
