MINTURN — Fire crews are beginning to cut down dead and dying trees infested by bark beetles along the Colorado Trail in the White River National Forest.
The U.S. Forest Service said the tree removal began Friday and will continue into next week from Camp Hale to Tennessee Pass.
Forest Service officials said the tree removal is happening now because fire crews are available due to a lull in wildfires. A hot-shot crew from Pueblo will be cutting down the trees with chain saws. Officials said the trees pose a danger because they could fall along the Colorado Trail.
