The driver of a pickup that crashed through a storefront — killing two in Greeley over the weekend — and his parents are “deeply saddened” by the deaths, his attorney said Tuesday.
Peter Wesley Lain, 29, of Evans is not yet speaking publicly, his attorney, David Japha, said.
Greeley police are investigating Saturday’s accident, when Lain’s Chevrolet pickup crashed into a Visionworks store at the Greeley Mall.
Kimberly Fletcher, 32, of Greeley, a customer in the store, and Jennifer Hudgens, 23, a Visionworks employee and University of Northern Colorado student, died in the accident.
Police are investigating the possibility that Lain could have had a seizure resulting from a medical condition.
“I don’t know if there is a medical condition and don’t have any ready answer on what happened,” Japha said. “I am not denying, I just don’t know.”
Lain, his mother and his father are saddened “by the profound loss of these two young women,” Japha said. “They don’t have a ready answer on what happened.”
Witnesses said Lain appeared to be unconscious when his truck drove through the plate-glass window at Visionworks.
On Monday, Lain signed medical releases to allow investigators access to his medical records, said Greeley police spokesman Joe Tymkowych.
Investigators also examined his vehicle to determine whether a mechanical failure led to the accident.
Detectives are expected to present their findings to the Weld County district attorney today or Thursday. The DA will then decide whether to file charges against Lain.
