GILLETTE, Wyo.—A Denver-based company that wants to farm methane in the Powder River Basin has withdrawn its application with the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.
But a spokesman said Wednesday that Luca Technologies is not dropping its plan to start a commercial scale project to produce methane by injecting a nutrient mixture into old wells.
The company was seeking an aquifer exemption, which is typical for projects that want to inject fluids underground. The commission was set to take up the issue Tuesday.
The company says its process is safe, but the Powder River Basin Resource Council has questioned whether it could jeopardize aquifers.
The company says Wyoming’s permitting process may not be comprehensive enough to address the unique regulatory needs of its project.
